Gokul & Mahavan: Where Infant Krishna Grew Up
Situated on the eastern banks of the Yamuna River, just 10 kilometers south-east of Mathura, Gokul is where Vasudeva carried infant Krishna across the flooded river immediately after His birth in the Kansa prison cell. Gokul and its twin settlement Mahavan were the sanctuary of Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya, where Krishna spent the first years of His childhood performing sweet childhood leelas and vanquishing demons like Putana, Trinavarta, and Shakatasura.
Vrindavan DMC (A Unit of KV Tours Pvt. Ltd.) organizes half-day and full-day Gokul excursions featuring private commercial transport, boat rides, and priest coordination.
Major Pilgrimage Shrines in Gokul & Mahavan
1. Raman Reti (The Sacred Sands of Gokul)
One of the most serene and peaceful places in all of Braj. The ground consists of ultra-soft holy sand where Lord Krishna and Balarama rolled, played, and grazed their cows with cowherd boys. Devotees reverently roll on the sacred dust to seek Krishna's blessings. The complex also features a beautiful deer park and ashram.
2. Brahmand Ghat (Where Mother Yashoda Saw the Universe)
Located directly on the Yamuna bank, this is the historic spot where baby Krishna ate mud. When Mother Yashoda scolded Him and asked Him to open His mouth, she gazed in astonishment at the entire cosmic universe, stars, planets, and oceans inside His divine mouth.
3. Chaurasi Khamba (Ancient 84-Pillared Palace of Nanda Baba)
Located in Old Gokul (Mahavan), this remarkable stone structure features 84 exquisitely carved pillars representing the 84 lakh species of life liberated by Lord Krishna's lotus feet. Houses the deity of infant Krishna swinging in a cradle.
4. Dauji Mandir (Baldeo)
Located nearby in Baldeo, this is the premier world shrine of Lord Balarama (Dauji Maharaj), elder brother of Krishna, carved out of deep black stone.
